CHAPTER 20
Wok ânâ Roll
Katy was waiting and pondering as Matt came out of the ICU pod, the name she heard the nurses use. She had worked on a few arrangements while he was visiting Shawn. Her heart swelled with overflowing love to see how her boyfriend and brother got along, not to mention the kind of day it had been.
Earlier Shawn was hanging to his life by a sheer thread but now he was off the ventilator, and they all had hope for his recovery. Of course, the doctor reminded them that Shawn still had a ways to go and anything could happen along the way. But prayer seemed to be a deciding factor, at least that was what she chose to believe.
There was a time when she would have called it hokey. Didnât she pray for her parents not to leave her all alone in the world? Maybe that was different. They were already dead when she found them. Maybe you had to pray for people before they had died. But what about Lazarus in the Bible, she wondered. Couldnât Jesus raise anyone, even his buddy Lazarus who was stinky having been dead for something like four days?
She didnât understand it all, so she made a mental note to try to learn more. For now, she decided to be grateful for the turnaround in Shawnâs medical status. Even the doctor had said it was âremarkable.â
And she would be grateful for the people who had shown up to wait with her at the hospital and to pray for Shawnâhis somewhat-estranged girlfriend, Tara, Matt and his sister, Angel, and their mother, Vicky, her neighbors Stan and Lily Beck, and her publishing friends Wes and Marjorie Stevens, and Melanie Barker and her boyfriend, Food Truck Jeff.
It was hard to explain how full her heart was. They all seemed to care forâ¦loveâ¦her and her brother, Shawn. They wanted only the best for them. So, all their friends and family prayed hard and asked God to bestow His healing mercies. And it was apparent He had. Otherwise, Shawn might not be here now and Katy would be grief-stricken.
This was all great but after her âepiphanyâ in the hospital restroom she wanted to learn how to accept whatever happened in oneâs life, including heartaches and situations that shock and horrify a person. She knew life wasnât easy for most everyone. Yes, some had it better than others.
And that brought her to now. After dinner tonight Katy would have to let Matt go for a time as he entered an evil place with evildoers who only had greed and self-gratification on their minds. How could she be strong and accept that?
âHey, babe. Got everything figured out?â
âYeah. I told the nurses where weâd be tonight and to call me for any reason. Tara was willing to do whatever I wanted, but since I wanted to be with you tonight she said sheâd like to take the cot and be with Shawn. Sheâs also going to get some food with Mel and Jeff, which I thought was nice of them.
